Beginners Guide To Sketching A Face | Art By Iqra

Writer: Iqra nabeelIqra nabeel

In this sketch, I will be focusing on the eyes nose and lip as oppose to the head and neck. An unusual and evocative effect can be achieved by having the face take up the whole page as I'm doing here.

The eye is, perhaps, the most expressive element and it is therefore essential to draw it in the correct position and to the exact shape. Notice that the white section of the eyeball is not pure white but actually changes color due to the effect of it's own shadow and the one cast by the eyelid.

Be careful to draw both eyeballs and pupils in the same direction as the expressiveness of the eyes depend on this. The female eye usually has long and thick eyelashes, while eyebrows are well outlined and thin

The nose is rather difficult to represent as it sticks out of the face and therefore its appearance varies depending on the viewpoint.

It's pyramid like shape is partly due to two small, close together bones and partly to cartilage. observing photographs makes it easier to understand nose structure.

The maximum amount of light is usually on the bridge of the nose and the tip.

The most intense shadows is at the base, near the nostrils. by focusing on the bridge, tip and base of the nose, you can draw an acceptable nose without making the drawing too heavy.

The mouth is the second most most expressive element of the face. The pinkish color of the lips is due to the tissue they are made up. When drawing the lips make sure that, above all, you carefully draw the line which separates them. also notice that the upper lip is usually thinner and more protruding than the lower lip.
